Frequently Asked Questions

Where are SIGG bottles made?
All aluminium SIGG bottles are made in Frauenfeld, Switzerland. Since 1908, Sigg Switzerland has been manufacturing the highest quality water bottles in the world.

Where are STEELWORKS Sigg Bottles made?
SIGG stainless steel bottles are designed by Swiss engineers at SIGG Switzerland, and forged in China. These bottles are made from sanitary grade, industrial strength 18/8 stainless steel. The plant employs a full-time Swiss quality control inspector and the Swiss Product Management team makes regular journeys to the plant in China to ensure SIGG Switzerland’s rigid quality controls and environmental standards are met.

Are SIGG bottles safe?
Yes, 100%. SIGG’s bottles have a water-based, non-toxic liner that has been rigorously tested to ensure that there is 0.0% leaching. The paint on the outside of the bottle is made from non-toxic, eco-friendly, food-grade paint. Unlike plastic bottles or poor-quality metal bottles, no chemicals or BPA will leak into your drink. SIGG bottles are safe for everyone and are manufactured under very strict quality control standards to ensure they remain that way.

What are SIGG tops made of?
SIGG tops are made from high-quality polypropylene, which is recyclable. The white, leak-proof seal on the screw tops is santoprene, a thermoplastic rubber. The materials used to make SIGG bottle tops fulfill the requirements of materials intended to come into contact with food, as prescribed by the FDA. (CFR, Title 21[2004] 177.1520). There are three kinds of SIGG tops to pick from, depending on your needs.

What is the SIGG bottle liner made of?
SIGG’s proprietary liner is a well-guarded secret. SIGG is the only company to use this uniquely formulated BPA-free liner that will not leach chemicals of any sort into your drink. It has been independently tested and proven to have 0.0% leaching. The liner has absolutely no phthalates, Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), Bysphenol A (BPA), Bysphenol B (BPB) or any other chemicals which scientists have deemed as potentially harmful.

Are SIGG bottles eco-friendly?
Yes, without a doubt SIGGs are the most eco-friendly reusable bottles available. They are designed by a Swiss team of engineers, and Switzerland is the greenest country in the world. SIGGs are 100% recyclable and are manufactured in an eco-friendly and sustainable manner. Every year, over 30 million single-use plastic water bottles end up in the landfill. In contrast, many SIGG owners use their bottles for over a decade.

Can I put carbonated beverages in my SIGG bottle?
Yes, it is safe to store carbonated beverages in your SIGG bottle. We recommend leaving at least a half-inch of space at the top to allow for pressure.
   - Do not shake your bottle with carbonated beverages.
   - Before you drink from your bottle, remember to gently twist the cap open to release any pressure.

Can I put acidic drinks, like apple juice in my SIGG bottle?
Yes. SIGGs are designed to hold any kind of consumable beverage. Acidic drinks will not harm the SIGG bottle liner, nor the bottle itself. However, natural processes such as fermentation will take place with acidic drinks no matter what they are stored in, so we recommend storing drinks such as apple juice in your SIGG for no longer than twelve hours.

Can I put hot beverages in my SIGG bottle?
No. The bottle is not designed to be used as a thermos and it can affect the life of the bottle (not to mention burning your hands!). If you are looking for a thermos bottle, we do sell Thermo SIGGs for hot beverages.

Can I put ice cubes in my bottles?
It is okay to put ice cubes or crushed ice inside your SIGG. However, you cannot store your SIGG in the freezer and allow the liquid inside to freeze! This can cause your SIGG bottle to crack open under the pressure. SIGGs are the toughest, most durable reusable bottles on the market, but even they can’t withstand the immense pressure of freezing. Storing your SIGG in the refrigerator is perfectly fine, though.

Remember:
- Do not fill SIGG bottles with fermenting beverages
- Protect SIGG bottles from extreme heat
- Do not place SIGG bottles in a freezer or microwave oven.

Can I clean my SIGG in a dishwasher?
SIGG Switzerland does not recommend cleaning your SIGG in the dishwasher for two reasons. Primarily because dishwashers do not clean the inside of your SIGG bottle properly. (The best way to thoroughly clean SIGG bottles and tops is by hand, using warm soapy water and allowing it to air dry) Secondly, because washing of a SIGG bottle in a dishwasher may in time cause the exterior paint coating to fade or chip off and may damage the top’s seal causing your bottle to leak.

Why is my liner chipping off?
Sigg’s liner is flexible and baked on to the inside of the bottle. Simply put, it cannot flake off. If you use your SIGG for sugary drinks, the sugar can leave behind deposits that will flake off as they harden. It may look like your liner is flaking off, but it’s actually sugar.

Why I have dark spots inside my SIGG?
Dark spots on the SIGG liner are usually caused by sugar or mineral deposits. You can get rid of these by flushing your SIGG out with hot water. You can also try soaking your SIGG overnight with vinegar and water inside, or using our special SIGG cleaning tabs. We also sell scrub brush kits that are designed to thoroughly clean the inside of your SIGG bottle.

I only use water, why do I have dark spots inside?
Dark spots inside your SIGG can be caused by either sugar or mineral deposits. If you are using your SIGG for water only, then you may have mineral build-up. To remove it, fill your SIGG bottle with distilled white vinegar and let it soak for a few hours or overnight. You can also use SIGG cleaning tabs or our special SIGG scrub brush set that’s specially designed to thoroughly clean the inside of your SIGG.

Why is there a metallic taste in my bottle?
Since the SIGG liner and the SIGG bottle are both taste- and scent-neutral, the taste is coming from the liquid stored in your SIGG. If you’re drinking water with a high mineral content, you may have mineral build-up on your SIGG liner. To get rid of mineral build-up, fill your SIGG with warm water and one tablespoon of baking soda and allow it to sit overnight. Wash the bottle to remove remaining build-up. If this does not work, try using SIGG cleaning tabs or the SIGG brush kit to thoroughly clean out your bottle.

Why does my SIGG have a dent on the bottom?
The dent is part of the manufacturing process. All SIGGs have a dent on the bottom. SIGGs are made from a single piece of aluminum and the dent is part of the SIGG design.

Can I put my bottle in a freezer?
No, absolutely not. Placing your SIGG in the freezer may cause the bottle to break open because of the pressure exerted by the frozen liquid. It is okay to put ice cubes in your SIGG or to store it in the fridge, but SIGG bottles can be damaged by freezing.

I dropped my bottle and it's dented. Is it still safe to use it?
Yes. Dents will not affect the SIGG liner as it is flexible and baked on to the bottle. Dents will not affect the performance of your SIGG.

Why is my seal leaking?
Your seal may not be properly in place. SIGG seals are flexible and leak-proof and are designed to last. If the seal is leaking, it may be due to damage from the dishwasher or it can become worn through intensive use. SIGG recommends washing all SIGG bottle parts by hand to ensure they last. We sell replacement tops and seals should you have a problem with yours.

Why is the paint flaking off the outside of my bottle?
SIGG bottles are decorated with a unique food-grade paint that is designed to last a long time. However, scrapes, dents and dishwasher cleaning may cause the paint to prematurely flake off. It will not affect the bottle’s functionality.

What is the best way to clean my SIGG?

Cleaning and Care Tips

SIGG water bottles last a long time. Durable and non-toxic, SIGG water bottles have been manufactured for a long life with plenty of use. Keeping your SIGG water bottle clean will help keep it in good condition longer. These cleaning tips will help you make the most of your SIGG water bottle:

Bottle tops can be taken apart and scrubbed. Separate the seals and flip open the top for proper scrubbing. The small cleaning brush from the SIGG Bottles Cleaning Brush set is the perfect size for cleaning SIGG bottle tops.

SIGG water bottles should be hand washed in hot water. Dishwashers may harm the durability of the outer coating and the leak-proof bottle top, and may not clean the bottle properly.

Always store SIGG bottles with the lid off to prevent moisture from being retained inside. After washing, dry the bottle, seals, and lid separately.

Allowing leftover drinks to dry inside SIGG bottles may make it harder to clean. If your water bottle is stained, SIGG Bottle Cleaning Tablets can help remove any buildup.
Additional cleaning instructions can be found on the bottom label of all SIGG bottles.
Here are a few tips for general care that will prolong the life of your SIGG water bottle:
Rinse SIGG water bottles, seals, and lids before using for the first time and dry separately.
SIGG reusable bottles are best for ready-to-drink beverages. They are suitable for fruit juices and isotonic drinks. SIGG bottles should not be used for long-term storage as staining may result.
When storing carbonated beverages, do not shake the bottle and use caution when opening.
Fill the bottle no more than 3 cm/1 ¼ in. below the rim to preserve the effectiveness of the leak-proof seal.
SIGG bottles can be safely stored in the refrigerator, but are not suitable for cooking, freezing, microwaves, ovens, and dishwashers.
Do not use for storage of non-drinkable substances such as liquid fuels or other chemical substances.
Don’t forget to recycle your SIGG water bottle at the end of its life! Separate the bottle, lid and seals before placing them all in the recycling bin.
